Bars and Nightlife in Bangkok

A go go Bar in BangkokThere are several nightlife areas in Bangkok, the main ones being Patpong (Silom Road) and several areas off the Sukhumvit Road. Sadly the reality is that Patpong has become too much of a thieves’ den for most people and thus is best avoided. So Sukhumvit Road with gogo bars on Nana Plaza (Soi 4) and Soi Cowboy (Soi 23) are the areas to see the raunchier side of Thai nightlife.

For those who just want bars and girls, Sukhumvit Soi 4 and nearby Sois of 5, 7 and 7/1 are good, as is the friendlier Queen’s Park Plaza in Soi 22 and of course the saloon bar options of Soi 33, although there I fear the difference in prices is more than just a pence or two. However for the first-timer looking for that unforgettable "one night in Bangkok" experience, ‘gogo’ on over to Nana Plaza or Soi Cowboy. This area has Bangkok Hotels give your choice...

Elsewhere in the city there are bars, restaurants and great music (Bangkok Gig Guide). Khao San Road is often talked about, but is really strictly a backpackers’ area as well as containing several Thai discos. (You can choose Bangkok Hotels in Khao San Road from this blog) Outer areas like RCA, Ratchada, Thonglor and Ekamai are mainly directed at locals rather than tourists.

Regulation has been confusing over the last few years with new rules coming in frequently, however many of those seem to be relaxing with the exception that proper bars must close at about 1pm. Then it is take to the streets and join the vast party therein - especially on Sukhumvit Road.

Bangkok or Krung Thep - the Full Name

Bangkok or Krung ThepUnless talking to foreigners who don't know any different, Thais will never call their capital city Bangkok - indeed, some Thais in the more remote provinces may never have even heard of it being called that. Instead in Thai it is known as Krung Thep (กรุงเทพ), which roughly translates to 'City of Angels'. Krung Thep is history city of Thailand. There are many choice Bangkok Hotels for travelers.

Bangkok (translating as 'village of wild plums') was the original site for the capital city and was located west of the Chao Phraya river (in modern day Thonburi). In 1782, King Rama I decided to move to a more defensible site and moved across the river to found his new capital, Krung Thep. For whatever reason, foreigners have never since caught up with the name change and the old name of Bangkok has stuck. In recent years, Krung Thep/Bangkok has expanded at such a fast rate that it now sprawls over a huge mass of land on both the sides of the Chao Phraya and has engulfed the once independent Thonburi.

Krung Thep is actually an abbreviated version of the ceremonial full name, which is shown below.

"กรุงเทพมหานคร อมรรัตนโกสินทร์ มหินทรายุธยามหาดิลก ภพนพรัตน์ ราชธานีบุรีรมย์ อุดมราชนิเวศน์ มหาสถาน อมรพิมาน อวตารสถิต สักกะทัตติยะ วิษณุกรรมประสิทธิ์"

In the official English romanisation, this is certified as the longest place name in the world in the Guinness book of records. It's pronounced something like:

"Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit"

Information of BangkokSo given the length of it, it's not hard to see why it's shortened in every day use. The full name itself is never actually used, though it can be seen on a few signs around Bangkok as part of a tourist campaign. Another version, Krung Thep Mahanakhon, is quite common in official documents, car number plates and the like. Despite the length of it, an impressive number of Thai people are still able to recite the entire name off by heart. They wouldn't necessarily understand what it means though, as many of the words are archaic and no longer used in modern Thai. The full name actually translates to a string of superlatives, which give some idea of how fond King Rama I must have been of his new city:

The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city (of Ayutthaya) of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn.

Khao San Hotels in Bangkok

Maps Khao San Hotels in BangkokFormerly a quiet local area with just a few budget guest houses, the Banglamphu area and famous Khao San Road have become an obligatory stop on the twenty-something travel trail, with cheap guest houses, street cafes, music shops, boutiques and bars. Over the last few years the area has become a tourist attraction in its own right given impetus by the novel “The Beach” which features Khao San Road. It's untypical of Bangkok and yet the back streets nearby retain some of their old fashioned Thai charm.

Accommodation used to be very basic but many guest houses are now upgrading with air-conditioning, pools and better quality rooms catering to a wider family market, at very reasonable rates. An extensive market, good cheap restaurants and the international mix of travellers and locals from different backgrounds make it an interesting place to visit or stay.
